Do you find yourself wishing you could grasp more natural teaching moments with your child? Do you have a child who resists anything contrived or in workbook form? Do you love unit studies, but have a hard time working in the nitty gritty details of grammar? Are you a Charlotte Mason or Ruth Beechick family who wants to get more out of copywork? Are you an unschooling or eclectic-learning family that wants to introduce small snippets of grammar into normal life? We are two moms who created this website for our own use, but would love to share it with others who are in the same boat. Dig in, explore, and let us know what you think!

Capitalization 4 - Common Nouns as Names

Capitalize common nouns if they are used as names. Do not capitalize them if they are preceded by a possessive pronoun such as my, our, his, her, etc.
Daily Grammar Lesson 303

Examples: Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, Grandmother, Grandfather

I love to play games with Grandmother.
My grandmother is a fun lady.

Examples: Nature, Love, Truth ... when they are personified

"We by art unteach what Nature taught" (Dryden)

Teaching Ideas:
  • Look for examples in books; childrens' books tend to have a lot of these names.  The Dr. Seuss books and Little Bear books are a good place to start.
Copywork Ideas (younger):
  • But there was Grandfather, fast asleep! (Lobel)
Copywork Ideas (older):
No tears
Dim the sweet look that Nature wears
(Longfellow)
    "Frog" and "Toad" are examples
