Do you find yourself wishing you could grasp more natural teaching moments with your child? Do you have a child who resists anything contrived or in workbook form? Do you love unit studies, but have a hard time working in the nitty gritty details of grammar? Are you a Charlotte Mason or Ruth Beechick family who wants to get more out of copywork? Are you an unschooling or eclectic-learning family that wants to introduce small snippets of grammar into normal life? We are two moms who created this website for our own use, but would love to share it with others who are in the same boat. Dig in, explore, and let us know what you think!

Common nouns refer to a general person, place or thing. Proper nouns are specific people, places, or things. Proper nouns are always capitalized.
Daily Grammar Lesson 18
Daily Grammar Lesson 304

Proper nouns: Rover, Legos, Toyota

Teaching Ideas:
  • Point out the difference between things and their names.
  • Make it a game at the grocery store or toy store.
  • Start to find common & proper nouns in weekly copywork of simple sentences.
  • Play noun games ("Search By Topic" in sidebar).
Copywork Ideas (younger):
  • Make a list of some common toys and their proper names.
  • Make a list of friend and family names.
Copywork Ideas (older):
    • Make a list of cities and states visited, or where friends and family live.
    • Make a Christmas or birthday wish list, pointing out the importance of proper nouns in describing what one really wants! (example: "game" ... do you want Hi Ho Cherry-O, or Wii Star Wars?)
List of common and proper nouns in
our Noun Collection (see "noun games" tag).
